A Challenge within your Challenge!

Filed under: 100 Day Challenge — Deb @ 3:07 pm

Sometimes, when you set a goal for yourself to make a change, you encounter blocks or speed bumps – something that slows you down or completely stops you as you reach for your goal.  Many people start the 100 Day Challenge and find it relatively easy at first.  Your excitement and the newness of the commitment help to keep you on track and motivated to do your challenge everyday.  Then something happens, as often does in life, to throw you off track.  You get sick, a family member needs help, a new opportunity is presented to you and before you know it, it has been days or even weeks since you did your 100 Day challenge.

For me, it has been a back problem.  Every once in a while, my back goes out of alignment and makes it difficult for me to walk, stand, sit or exercise for any length of time.  Oh great!!  I just started a challenge of walking for at least 20 minutes a day for 100 days and my back goes out!  Now what?  Do I stick to it, trying to disregard the pain?  Do I give up completely citing my back as a plausible excuse?  Or do I approach this as a challenge within the challenge, asking myself, what can I do to stick as close to my goals as I can?

I decided that I wanted to stick to my goals to the best of my ability and so everyday has been an evaluation.  Instead of pushing myself to walk the 20 minutes, I do what I can.  Some days it has meant that I don’t walk at all but most days, I can do something – five minutes, 10 minutes, 13 minutes!  I do what I can, respecting my body and also honoring my commitment to the 100 Day Challenge.

I know that some of you have also been challenged by your challenge and that’s good!  It gives you a chance to decide how dedicated you are and to push yourself to be creative about participating in your challenge.  I spoke to one challenger about how she is doing her challenge of writing everyday.  Some days, all she can find time for is to write one sentence so she writes one sentence.  Think about it, after 100 days, she would have 100 sentences.  That would make a nice little story, blog post, opening chapter, etc.

If you are being challenged by your challenge, don’t give up.  Find a way to stay connected to it and you will still reap the benefits.  I welcome your comments and questions about your challenge.  Post them here and let’s get creative about helping each other reach the finish line!

Joyfully,

Deb

Making Your Challenge More Fun! (week 2 of the 100 Day Challenge)

Filed under: 100 Day Challenge — Deb @ 1:45 pm

It can be challenging to stick to any kind of routine when you are on holidays so I was happy that the challenge I chose this year could really be done almost anywhere in almost any environment.  Now that I am home from my holiday, my 100 Day Challenge has become more of a …well…challenge!  On Day eight I did my daily walk in the Chicago airport again as I was on my way home from vacation.  Then, the reality of what I had committed to really sank in as on Day nine, I had to don my winter coat, toque, mittens and winter boots to do my walk – no more skipping out in my shorts and sandals!  Fortunately, our weather was very mild so while it was a bit of a shock to the system, it was manageable.

Day ten had me wondering how I could keep my interest in a daily walk when I didn’t have as lovely an environment as I had the first week.  How could I give my walks a more joyful focus so that I was motivated to continue?  It came to me that I could create a theme for everyday of the week – something to focus on each day to add interest and variety to my walks.  I have come up with a couple so far – Miracle Mondays and Thankful Thursdays – and I have a few more ideas but I thought I would ask you for your ideas and input.  Do you have any suggestions for daily walking themes?  Let me know by leaving a comment here and thanks for you help!

Day 11 and 12 were uneventful but Day 13 saw me out walking in the beginning of a blizzard!  Definitely not shorts and sandals weather but I stopped in at a friend’s house along the way and had a cup of tea. Now I’m wondering how I can plan more of my routes near friend’s houses and can I plan them around lunch time…!

I hope you are having fun with your Challenge and if not, what can you do to lighten it up and make it more fun or more joyful? What about other challenges you are experiencing?  Is there a way you can make those lighter, too?  This 100 Day Challenge is a great way to see how you can apply what you learn during the 100 days to the rest of your life.  Remember, you can help me out with some suggestions for daily walking themes and if you need some ideas to add some lightness to your challenge, let me know.  I love to brainstorm!

Deb

Let the Challenge Begin! (week one of the 100 Day Challenge)

Filed under: 100 Day Challenge — Deb @ 9:44 pm

I have to say my 100 Day Challenge started off on quite an enjoyable note!  For some reason, the beginning of the challenge often coincides with me taking a holiday and so February 5th found me going for my first walk in Chicago’s O’Hare Airport!  Nice easy walking in a comfortable environment.  The hardest part was not stopping at the chocolate store or the popcorn kiosk that I had heard so much about!  (Don’t worry, I went back after I finished my walk!).  The next day I did my walk on board a cruise ship – three times around the upper deck was exactly 21 minutes!  Again, nice easy walking and very comfortable conditions.  To be honest, I hadn’t been looking forward to having to walk outside in our cold, winter weather so for the first week of the challenge I definitely caught a break.

Day three of the challenge was again, a lovely stroll around the ship’s deck although I did have to adjust for the motion of the boat (something I won’t have to do now that I am back on solid ground).  Day four was a nice long walk around the village of Costa Maya and down the pier to get back on the ship.  It was in the rain but hey, I was still wearing shorts and a t-shirt!  We got lost trying to find our room on the ship so the additional two rounds on deck 8 added to our walking time!

Day five was in Cozumel and we started the day by doing the Amazing Cozumel Race!  We walked and ran for about 2 hours that morning and were definitely ready for lunch by the time the race ended!  Day six we were at sea all day making our way back to Miami but we managed to work in some walking in between listening to great bands all day!  Day seven was a nice long walk on Miami Beach!  I was definitely being spoiled by the lovely walking environments in the first week!

How was your first week?  Did you notice any resistance to doing your 100 Day activity every day?  Feel free to comment on how your week was or comment on mine – I am excited to hear from you!

The 12th Day of Joyful Reconnection!

I am Worthy!  When I drew this card the first thought I had was…”I am worthy of diamonds!”  Then I continued to follow the thought – what do diamonds represent to me?  Hhmm…for me, they represent beauty and love.  Beauty and love are the essence of this holiday season for me.  I am certainly worthy of beauty and love!

During these last twelve days, I hope that you have been able to see how you are worthy of beauty and love.  As you have reconnected with being valuable, zippy, daring, exceptional, focused, fulfilled, joyful, enough, juicy, grateful, unlimited and worthy I hope that you were able to create a new approach to a time of year that can pull you away from your center – your heart.  And all your heart wants you to know is that you are worthy of love!

As you go through this next week approaching the New Year, continue to use these words.  You can pick the ones you liked the most or maybe the ones that you needed the most – whatever feels right for you!  I wish for all of you a very light and joyous holiday season and a most delightful and delicious 2011!  (more words from the Reconnection deck!)

Joyfully,

Deb

The 11th Day of Joyful Reconnection

I am Unlimited!  This is a time of year where you can sometimes feel limited – not unlimited.  Limited patience, limited time, limited budget, limited space in your waistband!  The shift to being unlimited can be challenging and it is doable.  Start by entering your heart.  Your heart is your source of unlimited everything!  Patience, love, joy, courage, compassion, safety, creativity… the list is …well…unlimited!  You may be limited by the amount of money you can spend on a gift and you are unlimited in the amount of creativity you have to dream up a new way of giving.  You may be limited in the amount of time you have and you are unlimited in the amount of love you can share with family and friends.  You may be limited in patience and you are unlimited in the compassion you can have for those who are struggling to serve as many people as they can.

Repeat this word to yourself as you go through your day today and be sure to share the words with your friends, family and colleagues.  When you say “I am Unlimited” what comes to mind for you?  What does this word mean to you?  Let me know what your comments and experiences are of being Unlimited!

Joyfully,

The 10th Day of Joyful Reconnection

I am Grateful!  We hear a lot about gratitude and how being grateful can make such a difference in your day to day activities.  We’re often told to make a list of all of the things that we have whether it’s relationships, opportunities or material possessions and review the list often, expressing our gratitude for each item. This exercise is one that I agree with whole heartedly and often use it myself or with my clients to help with a perspective shift.   My question is, can you be grateful for what you don’t have?  Can you be grateful for the challenges or small inconveniences that you might encounter at this time of year?  Can you be grateful that you have to stand in line (because it gives you a chance to stop, breathe into your body and check in with yourself and your needs)?  Can you be grateful that you weren’t able to get the “must have” toy this year (because you don’t have to be stressed about how you will pay the credit card bill when it arrives)?  Take some time everyday to express gratitude for all that you have – even the challenges and watch your energy and joy increase everyday!

When you say “I am Grateful” what comes to mind for you?  What does this word mean to you?  Let me know what your comments and experiences are of being Grateful – even for the things that might be difficult!

Joyfully,

The 9th Day of Joyful Reconnection

I am Juicy!  Ha!  The first thing that came to mind when I drew this card was a juicy turkey.  It’s just not the same when you serve something that is dry and brittle.  Has your holiday season become dry and brittle?  What would it take to make your day juicy? Here’s a little acronym that Nancy (my joyful assistant) and I came up with to help you use the word juicy today!

J – Jubilantly

U – Use

I – Intensity to

C – Celebrate

Y – Yourself

Repeat this word to yourself as you go through your day today and be sure to share the word with your friends, family and colleagues.  When you say “I am Juicy” what comes to mind for you?  What does this word mean to you?  Let me know what your comments and experiences are of being Juicy!

The 8th Day of Joyful Reconnection!

I am Enough!  Woo…this word is a big one for me!  Being enough at any time of the year can be a challenge for me but the holiday season can certainly bring out a sense of “not enough” ness!  Being enough to me means that I don’t have to out do, give more, eat more, go to more parties, spend more money, etc.  I have enough food, I have baked enough, I have enough gifts to give….ahhh…I think this is my favorite word so far!

Repeat this word to yourself as you go through your day today and be sure to share the word with your friends, family and colleagues.  When you say “I am Enough” what comes to mind for you?  What does this word mean to you?  Let me know what your comments and experiences are of being Enough!  And remember – YOU ARE ENOUGH

The 7th Day of Joyful Reconnection!

I am Joyful!  It’s interesting how easily we can forget to be joyful at this time of year.  We are bombarded with messages of joy and peace and all around us it is more like stress and chaos!  When you feel stress creeping into your body take a breath and shift your thoughts to joy.  Look carefully at the situation you are in and find the joy there.  The more you can focus on joyful moments, the more joyful moments you will have!

Repeat this word to yourself as you go through your day today and be sure to share the word with your friends, family and colleagues.  When you say “I am Joyful” what comes to mind for you?  What does this word mean to you?  Let me know what your comments and experiences are of being Joyful!

The 6th Day of Joyful Reconnection!

I am Fulfilled!  Instead of operating from a belief (conscious or unconscious) that you are lacking or not enough shift your focus to all the ways that you are fulfilled.  Being fulfilled already leaves you free to enjoy what you have instead of worrying about what you don’t have.

Repeat this word to yourself as you go through your day today and be sure to share the words with your friends, family and colleagues.  When you say “I am Fulfilled” what comes to mind for you?  What does this word mean to you?  Let me know what your comments and experiences are of being Fulfilled!

Joyfully,

Deb
