You’re Not Normal!

Being Authentic is Messy!
Restore Yourself!

“What I love about myself is my weird sense of humor,” my friend said.  “Even though it’s not normal,” she quickly added.

“I wish I could just do my work like a normal person,” my artistic client sighed.

“I’m going to take this medication and then get off of it as soon as possible so I can get back to normal again,” another client said.

“I just want to feel normal again….”  (untold number of clients and friends!)

“Why don’t you just get a job like a normal person?” I asked myself…

Have you ever expressed this sentiment?  Felt this desire to be “normal”?  I can’t count the number of times I have heard this desire expressed by my clients, friends and colleagues.  But what does it really mean to be normal?  I looked up the definition of normal and here is what I found:

Merriam-Webster defines normal as:  usual or ordinary; conforming to a type, standard or regular pattern.

Yourdictionary.com has a similar definition:  regular; average; staying with the general standard.

Hmmm…I don’t know about you but when I read those definitions I am not exactly inspired to new heights of creativity or self expression!  Why would you want to be “normal” when normal means average, regular….conforming?

Okay, there is the argument that we want to be accepted, to fit in somewhere, to have friends or a social group but do you really have to be “normal” to get this need met?

What if you were just…you?  You ….in all your messiness, quirkiness, weirdness, not like the other-ness.  In other words…you as your beautiful, creative, wild, think outside the box, get sh*t done, completely not “normal” self.

Stop trying to be normal.

You’re not normal.

And that, my (not normal) friend, is the best thing that can happen to this planet!

Love,
